We just got our hands on the new 32-bit digital mixer from Behringer and our first impressions are positive. It’s packed with features and expandability that will keep it current and relevant in the fast changing world of DJ-tech. At first glance the mixer seems complex due to its numerous dials, buttons and faders, but a closer look reveals labels and controls clearly marked and ergonomically placed in a typical DJ mixer layout. It features 32-bit audio processing with 24-bit converters for a punchy, clean sound. There are four channels each with Gain, programmable EQs and kill buttons, fader curve control, and flexible crossfader assignments. Stereo phono/line inputs on each channel give you eight connected sources simultaneously.
One of our favorite features is the patented dual BPM counters that allow it to sync the samplers, FX and even send MIDI sync to external devices—such as a drum machine or software—for integration into your DJ sets. There are two sample banks that hold 32 seconds each. The samplers can be tempo-synched, looped, pitch-shifted and time-stretched as you would CDJs, and can be inserted into any channel on the mixer. The Mic section sports two inputs and its own dedicated EQ, FX and gain. (Nice touch.)
I like that you can store presets and setups on the DDM4000 which include EQ curves, crossfader curves, FX settings and much more for instant recall during your performances. It sure beats adjusting all those controls individually. The output section also has some interesting features such as a separate subwoofer output for easy club integration, and a SPDIF digital output for recording your mixes to digital devices. All the dials and faders send MIDI messages, so the mixer will work as a control surface for software—although a USB port for direct connection to your computer is missing. Its MIDI connectivity also allows software updates, FX preset downloads and more. Here’s the best part: you get all these features, a solid build and downloadable updates for only three Benjamins. Live it up.
