Natalia Clavier is the latest to Thievery Corporation’s international stable of artists. The Argentinean native has a varied vocal background performing in choirs, jazz ensembles, at raves, and, most notably, on fellow countryman and husband Federico Aubele’s album, Panamerican.
“El Árbol”
On her debut full-length, Nectar, Clavier has the production direction of Aubele and Thievery’s Eric Hilton, but her focus is on the sounds of her native Argentina. Languid and seductive, Nectar hits its stride midway with the flirtatious swing of “No Volvera” after the tango-inflected movements of “Ay De Mi.” Interest tapers off as Nectar moves forward. While Clavier’s voice remains stunning, the music doesn’t vary enough, turning into background sounds at an upper-class South American eatery. Too long to get going and too quick to become stagnant, Nectar is better for a download or two rather than a whole album experience.
