A journey through good times gone bad

Amusement parks offer a brief respite from the drudgery of day-to-day existence. They also let us cheat death. We get to do things that would usually kill (or at a minimum severely maim) us—things typically involving high velocities across multiple axes—in a protected environment. That’s the source of the thrill. “In any other circumstance, I’d be dead right now.” The level of trust between amusement park operators and their patrons varies. At the high end are the Walt Disney Theme Parks. At the low end is the distracted carny operating a rickety Tilt-A-Whirl in a church parking lot. RideAccidents offers a frighteningly comprehensive accounting of broken trust—a journey through good times gone bad, cataloging amusement park fatalities in the U.S. since 1972 and fatalities and injuries worldwide for nearly the last decade. Before you cancel those travel plans though, just know that the three people who died after riding Space Mountain shuffled off this mortal coil due to pre-existing conditions.
