The basic ideal behind Arne Quinze’s massive wooden sculpture in Brussels is one of brotherhood. The Belgian artist-meets-architect-slash-designer is kinda like the Beatles of the art world; he’s bringing people together. He’s trying to inject a sense of community into a neighborhood that has lost its way and he hopes that his sculpture, which he built in 20 days out of just under 60 miles of wood and over 240,000 nails, is the focal point. Cityscape: The Book highlights both the construction process and the finished structure and does a great job of detailing how the project was developed. If he actually does create dialogue between residents and gets them out of their homes, maybe we can send him to Iraq—there’s some much needed community building to be done over there.
