E3 Highlights – part 1

ztrip e3       Two days of stomping around the Los Angeles Convention Center put a hurt on my feet, but it was worth the pain to bring you some details about these upcoming titles.

homefront

Homefront (THQ/Kaos Studios) – Release Date TBA  In the not too distant future the United States is being occupied by a communist force.  Sound familiar?  The writer/director of Red Dawn, John Milius, was brought in as a consultant for this upcoming first person shooter.  The producers on hand were excited about the “drama engine” which enables the game’s pertinent action sequences to always occur right in front of the player.  They’ve also forgone cut scenes in favor of developing the story in game.  The action was fierce and the explosions many as a small American force fought off an enemy attack at a resistance stronghold in rural Colorado.  Producers also dropped hints about an epic final battle on the Golden Gate bridge and the use of military hardware inspired by current weapons in development.  If the 6-wheeled Goliath pictured above is any representation of what’s to come, this game should be chock full of Commie-blasting fun.

Bayonetta takes a breather

Bayonetta (Sega) – Release Date TBA 2009  In this action title directed by Devil May Cry creator Hideki Kamiya you control the outrageous acrobatics of Bayonetta, a goth/nerd/witch with a pechant for serious gunplay.  The gameplay is reminiscent of God of War with elements of the newer Prince of Persia titles.  Angelic and demonic monsters can be hacked up, riddled with bullets and magicked into bloody submission with fast paced precision.  Torture attacks and wicked finishing moves abound in what looks to be a very solid title.  One question, if Bayonetta has so many powers… why does she still need glasses?

dj-hero-w-guitar

DJ Hero (Activision/FreeStyleGames) – Release Date Fall 2009  While we couldn’t get our hands on the game, we were allowed to touch the controller which felt pretty good.  The demo run  by a couple of the developers showed off how some tracks would support a guitar controller alongside the turntable in a DJ Hero/Guitar Hero duet mode.  DJ Shadow, Z-Trip and other as yet unnanounced scratch masters will appear in game and both were on hand at E3 to entertain the crowds.  Current legal wranglings with the developers of the competing Scratch: The Ultimate DJ may place DJ Hero as the only Beatmania imitator on the market later this year.t-with-dj-hero1

Dude, DJ Hero looks pretty awesome. Did you see Tony Hawk’s demo of his new skateboarding game, by chance?

    BTW, rad shirt dude.

Yeah, Tony Hawk was on hand to show off his new game Ride. I’m still not too sure about the skateboard controller… but maybe that’s just the lazy gamer in me talking. “What, I gotta get off my couch to play a video game?”
