Producer Danger Mouse has teamed up with musician Sparklehorse to produce a lovely indie rock album called Dark Night of the Soul that you’ll be sure to hear in every hipster coffeeshop in Silverlake this summer.  This inspiring duo was able to get some of my favorite college radio all stars to contribute to the album as well: Wayne Coyne (Flaming Lips), James Mercer (Shins), Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals),  Jason Lytle (Grandaddy), Julian Casablancas (Strokes), Iggy Pop, and more.  But that’s not all folks, it gets even more star studded due to the fact that David Lynch got involved with the project by creating a 100 page booklet of original photos inspired by the photography that would be sold with the album.

So here’s the catch: due to legal reasons, their label EMI refused to release the album so Danger Mouse is stickin it to the man by releasing the photography book with a blank cd labeled “For legal reasons, enclosed CD contains no music. Use it as you will,” basically encouraging music fans to find their own ways to burn leaked copies of the album onto this CD.  The album is now floating out there in the “metaverse” so find it and I promise you’ll be pleased with what you hear.

However, if you’re one of those people that have no idea how to “find their own ways” of obtaining Dark Night of the Soul, you can listen to the full album here on NPR.
