Not an LA resident, the MC/DJ Pase Rock (check work with Spank Rock, Amanda Blank, XXXChange, Darko, M.I.A.) might as well set up shop with the amount of time he’s been spending in this town. Even he admits it, “LA feels a little more like home than NYC sometimes,” when asked about why his face keeps appearing. Our parties, the great weather—we get it. He’s not just kicking it, though. Be on the lookout for an album release in the summer, a couple of mix projects and new stuff for Fully Fitted—the label and the blog. He’s also working on XXXchange and Eli Escobar’s album and mad blogging on paserock.com, fullyfitted.blogspot.com, dimmak.com.
What do you think about the music, art and fashion scene in LA? Young and fresh—like it’s really happening. New York is in a little bit of a slump. The LA art I’m into is the MSK/AWR guys, Jersey Joe/RIME (who did the art for my last 12” “Get Money Kids”), the dudes at UNDFTD. This music is just catching up with New York, Philly, Baltimore/DC, and I guess Paris, but they’re doing it LA style. Mad flashy and loud. I think it might work a little better for the audience cause it’s so “Hollywood,” you know what I mean? Everybody loves Hollywood shit.
Where do you like to party out in LA? Banana Split. I’ve pretty much traveled the entire planet and that is the best party on earth right now. The energy in that room can be great…and the music. Love the Do Over. Other than that I’ll go to Deep or Dance Right at La Cita. The Pho restaurant on Sunset in Silverlake. Real heads know the deal. Control at Avalon and Blow Up LA, too.
Favorite LA DJs? J-Rocc, he’s just super clean on the mix and I like his taste. Thee Mike B on the club tip, he’s killing it…a DJ’s DJ. And probably Marques Wyatt on the house tip. If I felt like I could get away with playing deep house for these kids, oh man, I’d be in heaven. But I think the kids want techno, that’s what their t-shirts say.
If you could collaborate with any artist or DJ from LA who would it be? Lindsay Lohan, son! How ill would that be? She needs to do the customary hipster rap song. Ya know. Holler at me, slim! Y’all got my number…
