Mia Doi Todd

One for lazy summer mornings, the seventh album from multi-instrumentalist singer/songwriter Mia Doi Todd is a languid take on folk that grows with repeated listens.

“Sleepless Nights”

Todd produced the tracks in collaboration with Build An Ark’s Carlos Nino and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and the arrangements are both majestic and simple, but the focus is rightly retained on her voice. The classical training she had as a teenager may not be evident in any formal way, but there is a striking sense of the voice as instrument that helps drive Gea. The tenuously bent “please” in “Big Bad Wolf and Black Widow Spider,” the careful sibilance of the title phrase in “Sleepless Nights,” the percussive consonants within “knock, knock/ I opened my door to be understood’ from “Kokoro” share the stage equally with Todd’s haunting, adept songwriting—and Gea grows to become a lasting presence.
