I don’t really understand why the hell is soccer so popular? The most exciting thing it has going for it, in my opinion, is the hooligan riots that occasionally break out after the game. Those rule. But watching a bunch of average-sized guys run around a field as the clock ticks up rather than down (WTF is that about?)—not so great. Seriously.

It must be a cultural thing that reaches every other corner of the world except America, which is probably why Nike’s “Art of Football” competition, dubbed 1/1, isn’t a US thing. What does resonate about this project, though, is the art—particularly the three pieces Dominic Wilcox created: Cave (a bespoke shoe home), Top Corner (a silhouette of a footballer) and Blocks (a big-ass block of plastic footballers). We’ve shined some light on Dominic’s work a few times in the past. What can we say, we like his style. The first time he caught our eye was back in 2002 with his “War Bowl” made from melted toy soldiers. Much like that piece, Dominic used plastic soccer players to create his 1/1 pieces, but rather than melting the players to form, he glued thousands and thousands of them together. No doubt a challenge. “It became almost a meditative process. At one point I was in ‘the zone’ to the point that a super glue tube got stuck to the side of my finger, yet instead of spending time removing it, I picked up another tube and continued on,” Wilcox explains via his blog.
